Fine machining is a casting process that involves minimal or no material removal, making it an excellent technological advancement in the foundry industry with widespread applications. The reasons for choosing fine machining are as follows:
It can utilize common materials and make extensive use of scrap metal and recyclable resources. Compared with conventional forging, it consumes less material. Its cost is reasonable, its overall economic performance is good, energy consumption is moderate, and material usage is low. Casting offers broad adaptability, unrestricted by the size, thickness, or geometric complexity of the workpiece, and allows for flexible production processes. Investment casting delivers high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface finish, reducing the need for subsequent machining. It is well suited for producing high‑temperature alloy components—such as turbine blades, streamlined profiles, and cooling chambers—that are difficult to fabricate using conventional machining techniques. Castings achieve precise dimensions with minimal machining allowances, thereby saving both processing time and raw material.
The industrial requirements for precision machining are as follows:
1. Establish well-structured, integrated industry–university–research and education‑training bases that can continuously supply skilled personnel to enterprises, consistently develop new types of casting materials to meet the growing demand, and gradually strengthen efforts in technology import and export.
2. To accomplish industrial restructuring, a number of small casting enterprises with low technological levels, poor product quality, severe pollution, and unsatisfactory economic performance must be phased out, while fostering relatively concentrated “small giants” and “enterprise clusters” to achieve standardized, large-scale production.
3. Achieve a transformation in the mode of growth, shifting from labor- and resource-intensive to technology- and capital-intensive, and from extensive, polluting practices to green, intensive ones; ensure that product quality, variety, and output are on par with international standards, increase the share of advanced materials, and multiply both the production rate and economic efficiency of the entire casting plant; concurrently, advance environmental pollution control and lay the groundwork for establishing a Chinese foundry materials industry system that is harmonized with the environment.
